A Mirror and a Map

About the Project

Built from the 2024 National Latinx/é Arts and Culture Survey and Report, this website brings together insights and data collected from hundreds of Latinx/é arts and culture organizations across the United States, including Puerto Rico. Their shared experiences reveal key trends in leadership, staffing, community engagement, and philanthropic support, highlighting strengths and challenges within the field today. These insights speak to where the field currently stands and present opportunities for current and future path-making. This website also contains toolkits that translate data and findings into interactive resources, designed to inform and serve individuals and organizations as they advocate.

This website and toolkit serve as both a mirror and a map: they reflect the stories, realities, and voices of Latinx/é arts and culture workers and organizations while offering data, tools, and resources to help guide decision-makers as they work to strengthen infrastructure, expand opportunities, advocate for support, and build collaboration.

The Initiative

The 2024 National Latinx/é Arts and Culture Survey expanded on NALAC’s 2019 National Assessment of the Latinx Arts Field. Led by NALAC, in collaboration with NORC at the University of Chicago and with funding support from the Wallace Foundation, the survey gathered information about arts and culture organizations founded, led by, and serving Latinx/é people across the United States, including Puerto Rico, who have long been underrepresented in national datasets.  The survey results, data collected, and comprehensive analysis were compiled into our final research report, “A Mirror and a Map: Reflecting Organizational Realities and Navigating Change among Latinx/é Arts and Culture Organizations.”

The survey and corresponding research report tell a vibrant story of the current realities of Latinx/é organizational capacity, programs, finances, and sustainability. These findings provide critical data aimed to help inform and impact policy decisions that affect our field and communities, ensuring the arts and culture sector is equitably resourced and well-funded across the United States, including Puerto Rico.
